Did You Know? The City Of Edmonton
  • Edmonton is the capital of the province of Alberta, the second largest metro area west of Toronto and the sixth largest city in Canada.
  • Edmonton is the largest city on the Trans-Canada Yellowhead Highway, which accesses more national and provincial parks than any other route across western Canada.
  • Edmonton is situated on VIA Rail’s “The Canadian” route, which travels from Toronto to Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper and Vancouver.
  • The world’s longest crude oil pipeline is the Enbridge Pipelines Inc. (1950) connection from Edmonton to Buffalo, NY -a distance of 1,775 miles (2,856 km).
  • Population: Greater Edmonton is approximately 945,000 (2002) (The Edmonton region is projected to reach one million in 2006)
  • The City of Edmonton encompasses a land area of 700 square kilometers
  • The current mayor is Stephen Mandel
  • It is home to the world's largest mall - The West Edmonton Mall
  • The marigold flower, selected as the official city symbol in 1964, represents sunny Alberta and Edmonton’s role in the Klondike Gold Rush. Like the marigold, which has many varieties, Edmonton’s population is made up of more than 50 ethnic groups.
  • Visitors are assured of plenty of sun and beautiful blue Alberta skies during their visit, regardless of the season. The city averages 12.32 hours of sunshine daily - making it one of the sunniest cities in Canada. At the height of summer, there are up to 17 hours of daylight each day.

Resource > Local Newspapers
    Edmonton Journal

It all began at the back of the Shamrock Fruit Store in 1903. Amid apple crates and potato sacks, three enterprising newsmen produced the first edition of the Edmonton Journal. A century later, we remain Edmonton's most trusted voice, providing a fresh perspective on news, sports and entertainment that's picked up by more Albertans than any other daily newspaper.
