February 2, 2009 - 12:00 pm (repeated at 6:00 pm)

  • VoicePrint speaks with Lindsay Tyler of the CNIB, who discusses the many services provided by the CNIB Library, including:
    • its effort to upgrade its collection by providing books in audio and braille formats;
    • the most popular titles;
    • how one can place an order;
    • and how books are chosen to be recorded.

February 6, 2009 - 12:00 pm (repeated at 6:00 pm)

  • VoicePrint is pleased to present a special program saluting White Cane Week 2009, featuring an interview with award-winning singer-songwriter Terry Kelly. Kelly, a Halifax-based musician, has been blind since birth. He has shared the stage with such luminaries as Ray Charles, the Rankin Family and Rita MacNeil, and was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2003.

February 7, 2009 - 12:00 pm (repeated at 6:00 pm)

  • VoicePrint speaks with Emily Baarda, Orientation and Mobility Specialist from the CNIB about a program that helps people who have lost their vision to adapt to their surroundings as vision-impaired individuals. What are the initial fears and concerns faced by people who have recently lost their vision? What is involved in orienting them to their new circumstances?

Over the years, the White Cane Week programme has evolved to reflect the changing situations of people who are blind and vision impaired.

In early years, the White Cane Week was used to demonstrate the concerns for good rehabilitation and blindness prevention. However, in more recent times, events have begun to emphasize the equal capabilities and talents of people who are blind and vision impaired.

For more information, please visit the CCB website.
