October Is Eye Health Month: Find Out More On VoicePrint Eye Health Month 2007 is a national public awareness campaign that highlights the importance of eye health and regular eye examinations. VoicePrint is pleased to work with the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) to help promote this important project. For more information, including audio, see below.

Download our special Eye Health Month interview with Dr. Graham Strong of the School of Optometry, University of Waterloo and learn more about the public’s misconceptions of eye care and what people should do to maintain healthy vision. The Contact interview also examines the pros and cons of laser surgery as well as the emergence of host video-based devices for people with low-vision. Original air date: Sunday, October 7 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
- Also tune in to VoicePrint on October 20 at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Eastern for our two-hour Eye Health Month special, which includes:
- An interview with Dr. Gerald Chader, Chief Scientific Officer of the Doheny Retina Institute at the University of Southern California. Dr. Chader elaborates on the research involving six patients who were originally blind but had their sight restored through the use of a retinal prosthesis, or “bionic eye.”
- The first of two series of special articles from The Canadian Blind Monitor (listen for “Faking it no longer,” by Cheralyn Braithworth Creer on her struggle to come to terms with her diminishing vision).
- Next we ask: How far away is the scientific world in being able to restore vision? According to Dr. William Hauswirth, professor of ophthalmic molecular genetics in the College of Medicine of the University of Florida, his gene therapy research and the restoration of sight of blind mice may give us reason for hope.
